Specialty Lenses

Using specialty lenses such as fisheye, telephoto, and shift-tilt, have their place in photography. Just like with all things, they should be used in moderation. It is important to know the limitations of your lenses and what they can and can not do well and byt that same token, it is a good idea to use different lenses shooting the same subject matter so that you know what looks best according to your style in any given situation.

Fisheyes are best in some sports and in certain situations. they have limitations before images start becoming distorted. Use them sparingly. I have always had the most use out of Canon's 16-35mm 2.8n lens with very little distortion but still with a great wide angle effect.

Telephotos are great for issolating the subject on a busy background and alos capitalizing on emotion on an atheltes face. The photo I shot of the snowboarder falling below of a great example of when a telephoto can be of great use. You can not get that kind of a shot with a wide angle lens.

Shift-Tilt lenses are used for shooting architectural images where using a normal wide angle lens will distort the image and the building, whereas a tilt-shift lens will keep its perspective accurate.

Good Examples of using Telephoto verses Wide angle.

This is a good example of when to use telephoto lenses.

Believe it or not, this photo was taken with natural light, no flash or strobes. There was a window giving light to a gym with the lights turned off. The image was part of a story on a local YMCA youth organization

I hung out with this homeless guy for a while. I gave some cash for his time. Just felt like taking photos of someone living on the streets.
